Personal style systems: a quiet way to find your look.

What is a personal style system?

The most common framework is the three-word method, popularized by stylist Allison Bornstein. You choose three adjectives that describe how you want to look and feel — for example classic, romantic, undone — and every purchase, outfit, and edit is judged against them.

The words aren't a uniform. They're a filter. A cropped leather jacket can be "classic, romantic, undone." So can a cream slip dress. So can a pair of loafers. The three words tell you which of the thousands of possible pieces are actually you.

How to find your three words

1. Save 20–30 outfit images that make you feel something — Pinterest, magazine covers, street style.
2. Group them. Look for repetition: silhouettes, colors, textures, level of polish.
3. Write down five adjectives for each cluster (soft, tailored, worn-in, sculptural, quiet…).
4. Circle the three that keep showing up. Those are your words.

Applying it inside StyleVault

Once you have your three words, use them as a running filter across every StyleVault surface:

• Add-item AI tagging. When AI suggests tags for a new piece, add your three words to the notes field. The stylist reads these when it proposes looks.
• Outfits. Before saving a look, ask: does this outfit match at least two of my three words? If not, edit it — swap a piece, remove an accessory.
• Wishlist and shopping. Anything that doesn't match all three words goes back on the rail. Cost-per-wear starts high, not low.
• AI stylist. Open the stylist and say "I dress classic, romantic, undone — plan a five-day capsule for London in October." It will draw only from pieces that fit that brief.

Your three words usually pull from a small vocabulary of recognized clothing styles. Skim the list — you'll notice which ones you already own:

Why a system works

A wardrobe without a system is a rack of orphans. A wardrobe with a system is a language you speak fluently — every piece talks to every other piece. That's the entire point of building a virtual closet: not to catalog what you own, but to see what you own as a whole, then edit until the whole tells one story.
